2000 Cotes du Rhone Villages – Louis Bernard

4 grapes

As a consultant, is my job to discover new and interesting products for my clients. But when it is my client that is able to turn the tables on me, I just relax and enjoy the wine. As it was this time.

Murray Einhorn of 67th Street Liquor Store in Red Deer, Alberta, asked me if I was familiar with this wine. While Louis Bernard is a well known Rhone producer, my answer was no.

So, after my wine presentation in Red Deer, Bill Hull, owner of the store, Murray, manager and I sat down to discover if this wine truly merited its high rating given by the Wine Spectator (91 WS Sept 15,2001).

The Riedel glasses really helped. This young wine exhibited freshness and a vibrancy of an already appealing wine. A brilliant red colour with gobs of fresh red cherries complimented with hints of pepper and nutmeg along with youthful yet subtle tannins. It is the forward fruit finish that gives this wine its real elegance.

Our consensus: more new world style than old world.

The Purple Feet Rating System:

5 grapes = spectacular
4 grapes = delicious
3 grapes = yummy
2 grapes = okay
1 grape = awkward
