1998 Riesling - Giesen Estate Winery - Cantebury - New Zealand

4 grapes

When we talk about white grapes, Riesling is a grape that reminds you of the wonderful slopes of the Mosel, with the daring pickers on those dangerous yet seducing slate terrain. And like their slopes, Riesling is a very seducing grape.

Becoming more and more popular the world over, Riesling is quasi the perfect food wine. From tart to sweet, this grape will make any and every meal a total success.

So it's no surprise that my pick of the week relates to this wonderful grape. However with new places coming on board nearly every day, let's go and taste a great discovery from New Zealand.

Date of Harvest 1st to 8th May 1998, Region Canterbury, Brix at Harvest 20 to 23.

While the 1998 Riesling comprises a blend of five different vineyards in the Canterbury region, its very ripe fruit, harvested early in May, gives quality and texture a new meaning. Seductively elegant, this dry wine has produced a wine displaying the freshness and richness of aroma and flavour that can only be achieved with Riesling.

The majority of grapes were fermented to dryness at low temperature to preserve the classic Riesling aromas found in this wine. The remaining portion using botrytis affected fruit was fermented to the desired sugar level, then blended with the dry portion.

The Purple Feet Rating System:

5 grapes = spectacular
4 grapes = delicious
3 grapes = yummy
2 grapes = okay
1 grape = awkward
