2000 Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz - South Australia
With almost 150 years of remarkable history, Penfolds is perhaps Australias best-known success story. With the likes of Grange, Bin 707, St. Henri Shiraz, quality has always been at the forefront of Penfolds philosophy.
And now in Alberta comes a new line that merits close attention: Thomas Hyland.
The Thomas Hyland range honours the pioneering spirit of Thomas Hyland, son-in-law of Dr. Penfold, who helped to guide the winery to greatness after the founder passed away in 1870. Dr. Penfold's belief in Thomas proved to be fortuitous as he carried out and never wavered from Dr. Penfold's passion for greatness and quality.
The 2000 Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz comes from select parcels of fruit that John Duval, their winemaker, has set aside due to their exceptional quality and unique flavoured style. Fruit was sourced predominantly from McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and the Barossa Valley in South Australia, with each providing a desired attribute for the final blend.
40% of the blend was matured for 15 months, and 60% for 10-12 months in used French and American hogsheads.
Colour: Deep youthful crimson red.
Nose: Mulberry and blueberry fruits are interlaced with hints of spicy oak, licorice, and eucalyptus. Rich fruitcake notes and chocolate are framed within the lifted berry fruit of Coonawarra.
Palate: Fleshy small berry and plum fruit flavours are elegantly laced with fine tannins, subtle oak, and the long finish enhances a generous mouth feel.
