Montirius Gigondas, 1999

4.5 grapes

France - Côtes du Rhône - Southern Rhône - Gigondas
Red dry, 14%, Grenache - Syrah blend

  • Red dry, 14%, Grenache-Syrah blend
  • Eye - Ruby in colour with purple hints and aubergine notes. Brilliant and opaque.
  • Nose - Cherries, blackcurrants and bilberries show through on the nose. A certain floral element also with peonies and roses.

Delicate and elegant aromas with notes of thyme and spice also showing through. Superb! Palate - Fruity on the palate showing primary flavours of fresh grape juice with lovely tannins. Notes of liquorice and violet hinting at the presence of syrah in the wine. A very slight spritz on the tongue demonstrates the youth of the wine but will disappear soon.

Gold Medal in the Macon's Wine Fair 2001, rated 94/100 by The Wine Spectator in the November 2001 edition and #13 Wine of the Year 2001 in Wine Spectator.

A rich and incredibly fruity wine, which is showing considerable promise. Supple and juicy flavours with a firm backbone of ripe tannins. Intense aromas of liquorice and violet hinting at the presence of syrah in the wine. Wonderful with roast guinea fowl or pheasant or mushroom risotto.I love this wine for the richness of it's fruit and the wild notes which remind me of the garrigue.
A real case of an iron hand in a velvet glove. A most promising organic wine from this region which has tremendous potential. A real favourite of mine.
